RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Defense and security cooperation between Indonesia and Rwanda has begun producing concrete results, including a strengthened partnership between the Indonesian National Police (Polri) and the Rwandan National Police.

Through this collaboration, Rwandan police personnel can now participate in police training programs in Indonesia.

“The security and defense cooperation is a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship between the two countries,” Rwandan Ambassador to Indonesia, Abdul Karim Harelimana, said on the sidelines of the traditional Rwandan celebration, Umuganura, in Jakarta on Friday evening, August 7, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He explained that Indonesia and Rwanda have signed a letter of intent to facilitate discussions on defense and security cooperation. “This allows us to continue advancing the dialogue on this cooperation,” he said.

Harelimana noted that one concrete achievement of the cooperation is the strengthened partnership between Polri and the Rwandan National Police, covering education and training, information and expertise exchange, and police capacity development.

Previously, on October 6, 2025, Indonesian National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Rwandan National Police Chief Inspector General Felix Namuhoranye signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance efforts against organized transnational crime.

The cooperation also includes joint training programs and the development of police human resources.

Indonesia views the partnership as a demonstration of both countries’ commitment to strengthening international police cooperation and law enforcement.

Meanwhile, on February 5, 2026, Ambassador Harelimana met with Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin in Jakarta to discuss bilateral defense cooperation, including the possibility of establishing a defense dialogue forum to support long‑term collaboration. ***
