RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is intensifying preparations fo UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp) revalidation process. The assessment for Ijen Geopark is scheduled for early August.

In an interview with RRI Voice of Indonesia on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, the spokesperson of Indonesian Ministry of Tourism, Nia Niscaya, explained the government's tourism-related responsibilities regarding geoparks. She said geoparks belong to Indonesia's nature tourism portfolio within national tourism development.

She said UNESCO requires recognized geoparks maintaining and improving management quality through periodic revalidation processes. Therefore, the ministry coordinates efforts involving local governments, communities, and central government institutions nationwide.

Niscaya added that the revalidation occurs every for years for green card-holing geoparks. "To retain status, the geopark management body is required to undergo a periodic revalidation process and follow up on the recommendation provided by UNESCO as a part of efforts to enhance management performance and then conservation, education, and sustainable development," she said.

The ministry is currently providing supporting facilities and organizing seminars for several geoparks. In Ijen, authorities prepared leaflets, booklets, and interpretative labels for visitors.

Additional preparations include informational signboards for geosites visited by UNESCO assessors during evaluations. The ministry is also organizing an international seminar supporting Merangin Jambi Geopark revalidation.

The spokesperson highlighted Ijen's unique combination of volcanic geosites, biosites, and cultural attractions. She said Ijen has become an internationally recognized geopark tourism destination since 2023.

The ministry hopes the ongoing revalidation process produces positive results for Indonesian tourism. Sustainable geopark management will strengthen conservation, education, and local economic development.
