RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The air quality across cities in Indonesia may be decreasing when the country is entering the peak dry season. The warning was given by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

In an interview with RRI Voice of Indonesia on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, BMKG's Deputy for Climatology, Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, conveyed air quality decrease is one of many impacts of the dry season. But, contrary to the popular belief, he said the air pollution is not rising during dry season.

"Usually, people call the air pollution increase using the dry season. Well, it's actually not. It's actually the pollution is not decreasing rather than increasing," he said. He affirmed the situation happened the cities do not experience rainfall during this time of the year.

Pollution sources from transportation, industry, and energy sectors continue operating during dry periods. Without rainfall assistance, pollutants remain longer within urban Indonesian atmospheric conditions across cities.

Apart from expecting lower air quality, Ardhasenan also reminded people to adapt to other impacts of the dry season. "We should prepare actually from a few months ago," he said.

First, people are suggested to stay hydrated all the time. This is because dry condition can affect health.

Then, the climatology deputy recommended to avoid sun radiation during the dry season. People can do it by wearing head covers when going outside for a significant amount of time.

Lastly, he urged the people to save water. Because according to him, the dry season might last until around the middle of October this year.
