RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Thousands of Buddhists from various regions in Indonesia and several international participants took part in a procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple on Sunday, July 26, 2026, as part of a series of commemorations of the Āsāḷha Mahāpūjā 2570 BE, 2026. The procession, which began at around 2:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time), filled the approximately three-kilometer-long route.

The procession featured four chariots carrying the Asoka Monument, the Tipitaka Scriptures, the Dhamma Wheel or Dhammacakka, and the Saririka Dhatu, a relic of the Great Teacher Buddha. The chariots were accompanied by monks, novices, atthasilani, priests, participants of the Indonesia Tipitaka Chanting (ITC), and other Buddhists.

The four chariots symbolize respect for the teachings, sacred relics, and noble values of Buddhism, which are continuously preserved and passed down to future generations. The procession proceeded solemnly, with a strong sense of togetherness among the participants.

Bhikkhu Subhapanno Mahāthera explained that the procession was a form of respect to honor the Great Teacher Buddha and to remind the congregation of the essence of Buddhist teachings in daily life. He added that the journey from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple also served as an inner journey to cleanse the heart and mind.

According to him, the procession encouraged the congregation to reflect on the nine noble qualities of the Buddha, ranging from love, compassion, purity, and wisdom. He emphasized that the procession should be undertaken with a calm and earnest mind.

One participant from Bekasi, Yayang Riyadi, admitted that this year's procession was a profound spiritual experience for him. He said the participants were reminded to take the procession seriously, as the journey was a form of respect for Buddha, not just a casual stroll.

Meanwhile, Borobudur resident Oki Reni expressed joy and enjoyment watching the procession. He believes this activity reflects the diversity of religious communities in Indonesia and hopes that similar events can continue to be held annually.
