RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Chairman of the Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Division of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Prof. Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim, welcomed the official explanation delivered by Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, regarding the arrest of Abdul Karim Miqdad.
Prof. Sudarnoto conveyed the minister's clarification was crucial in easing the controversy that had developed over the past several days due to the lack of official information from the government. According to him, Yusril’s direct explanation provided legal certainty and reassurance, particularly for Palestinian nationals currently residing in Indonesia.
"I believe Prof. Yusril's explanation was very clear. Our Palestinian friends here, God willing, have now received a comprehensive explanation and have no reason to worry, because this is a personal case," Prof. Sudarnoto said after receiving Minister Yusril during a courtesy visit at the MUI headquarters in Central Jakarta on Wednesday evening, July 22, 2026, as quoted by mui.or.id.
Prof. Sudarnoto further explained that, prior to the government's official clarification, concerns had emerged among Palestinians living in Indonesia that they might face similar treatment.
However, following the government's explanation—which was consistent with the aspirations expressed by various Islamic organizations—MUI believes the situation has remained calm and conducive.
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Prof. Yusril Ihza Mahendra, addressed the various speculations and narratives circulating in the public regarding Abdul Karim. Yusril underscored that Abdul Karim was neither an Islamic scholar nor a humanitarian activist, contrary to reports circulating online, but rather an ordinary individual involved in a legal case.
"I hope this explanation helps the public understand that the person who was deported is an ordinary individual, not an Islamic scholar. This is simply an individual legal case involving a common violation of the law," Yusril told reporters after the closed-door meeting.
In addition, Minister Yusril further explained that Abdul Karim Miqdad's repatriation, or deportation, was carried out by the Indonesian National Central Bureau (NCB) of Interpol at the official request of the Cyprus National Central Bureau through the Interpol mechanism coordinated from Paris.
