RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Head of RRI Voice of Indonesia, Widhie Kurniawan, has been selected as one of the nine members of Indonesia's broadcasting regulator, the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI), for the 2026–2029 term. His appointment was confirmed during a plenary session of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

The KPI was established in 2002 following the enactment of Act No. 32 of 2002 on Broadcasting, during Indonesia's reform era after more than three decades of President Soeharto's New Order rule. As the country's broadcasting regulator, the KPI sets broadcast content standards, primarily for radio and television, and monitors programming to ensure compliance with those standards.

Dealing with broadcasting and other issues, Deputy Chairperson of the DPR's Commission I,Sukamta, announced the names of the nine selected commissioners, who come from diverse professional backgrounds. They were chosen following a selection process that began in January and was facilitated by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs. Commissioners serve three-year terms and may be reappointed once.

According to him, the commissioners were selected by consensus. Besides Widhie Kurniawan, the newly appointed members are Tulus Santoso, Andi Sukmono, Fuji Samantha, Aliyah, Evri Rizqi Monarshi, Analisa, Amin Shabana, and Muhammad Hasrul Hasan; while three alternate commissioners were also selected.

"Commission I of the House of Representatives requests your commitment to carry out the duties, functions, and authority of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission professionally and responsibly, while upholding morality, integrity, and independence, avoiding all forms of misconduct and abuse of authority, and serving on a full-time basis," Sukamta said, as quoted by the parliamentary television channel TVR Parlemen.

Chairperson of the KPI for 2023–2026, Ubaidillah, congratulated the newly appointed commissioners. He expressed hope that ongoing efforts to strengthen the KPI through revisions to the Act of Broadcasting—including expanding its regulatory authority to cover digital media—would continue.

"I hope the KPI will continue to play an active role in creating a fair broadcasting governance system for all stakeholders while protecting the public, including future generations," he said, as quoted from the KPI website.

Widhie is the first professional from Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), Indonesia's national public radio broadcaster, to be appointed as a KPI commissioner. In addition to serving as Head of RRI Voice of Indonesia since late 2024, he previously led the RRI News Center, overseeing the broadcaster's national news radio station RRI Programa 3.

During his parliamentary fit and proper test on Monday, July 13, 2026, Widhie discussed the current state of Indonesia's broadcasting industry amid the rapid growth of digital platforms such as streaming services and social media. He argued that media remain an effective tool for promoting national values and strengthening social character.

He also called for a broader role for the KPI, suggesting that the commission should move beyond its traditional focus on regulation and enforcement to work more closely with broadcasters in maintaining audience engagement. He emphasized the importance of establishing a collaborative platform for developing broadcasting strategies and strengthening locally produced content.
