RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is advancing revisions to its Citizenship Law to strengthen legal protection and improve administrative governance. The discussion took place during an internal meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
The meeting focused on supervision and law enforcement aspects of the draft amendment to the Citizenship Law. Officials also aligned policy perspectives before the harmonization process moves forward.
The Indonesian government said the revised law seeks to respond to global developments and increasing cross-border mobility. It also aims to improve legal certainty through stronger coordination among government institutions.
Assistant Deputy for Legal Administration Governance, Sri Yuliani, said the draft introduces a more adaptive approach to citizenship administration. She explained the reform also strengthens civil rights protection for vulnerable groups.
"The Citizenship Bill is a progressive step to strengthen civil rights protection, particularly for vulnerable groups, while aligning Indonesia's citizenship system with global developments. Its successful implementation requires synchronized public service functions among ministries and agencies, as well as adequate supporting technical regulations," she said.
Assistant Deputy for Legislative Drafting and Litigation, Fiqi Nana Kania, said several strategic issues still require further discussion. Those matters will be addressed through inter-ministerial leadership meetings before the bill is finalized.
"These issues will be discussed and decided through cross-ministerial and agency leadership meetings to reach a common understanding in refining the substance of the Citizenship Bill," she added.
Deputy for Legal Coordination, Nofli, said the ministry will continue coordinating legal policy across government institutions. The effort aims to produce a comprehensive, implementable law that reflects Indonesia's national interests.
