RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesian Agency for Research and Innovation (BRIN) aims to launch the Nusantara Earth Observation‑1 (NEO‑1) satellite in January 2027. The satellite represents a strategic step toward strengthening Indonesia’s independence in space technology.
“This Earth observation satellite is the work of Indonesia’s brightest minds,” said BRIN Head Arif Satria during the 50th Anniversary Commemoration of Indonesian Satellites in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 8, 2026.
Arif explained that satellite self‑reliance is not only measured by technology ownership but also by the ability to master all stages of satellite development independently. “Self‑reliance means a nation’s ability to design, build, integrate, test, launch, operate, and utilize satellites on its own,” he said.
He noted that the launch of NEO‑1 will mark a significant milestone in Indonesia’s mastery of satellite technology. “Our biggest hope is that Indonesia will be able to produce its own national telecommunications satellites,” Arif said.
BRIN is also promoting the construction of a National Spaceport to support satellite launches from within Indonesia. “We hope that in the future, Indonesia will no longer be entirely dependent on foreign launch service providers,” he said.
Arif emphasized that advances in space must deliver economic, social, and strategic benefits to society.
He added that the 50th anniversary of Indonesia’s satellite program is an opportunity to strengthen national technological sovereignty and position Indonesia as a key player in the global space economy. (Gusti Panji)
