Online Bike Taxi Pushes to be Recognized as Public Transportation in Indonesia

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Syaiful Huda, said the House is pushing for the recognition of online motorcycle taxis, known locally as ojek online or ojol, as a mode of public transportation in Indonesia. He views the step as critical to provide legal certainty for online transportation services, which have been a part of public mobility for years.

He stated that motorcycles in Indonesia are still not recognized as a mode of public transportation. However, he said, demands for legal recognition for motorcycle taxis have been circulating for a long time and urgently need to be confirmed through regulatory changes.

"In fact, this demand has been around for almost 15 years. Therefore, we will regulate several aspects related to public transportation in the revised law," Huda said at a forum in Jakarta on Thursday, July 2, 2026, as quoted by dpr.go.id.

Huda further said this recognition is an important step towards building a more organized online transportation ecosystem, while providing certainty for all parties, including drivers, app providers, and the public as service users. He emphasized that the main focus of the regulations will be to strengthen the transportation aspect, including the legal status of online two-wheeled transportation as part of the national public transportation system.

"Meanwhile, issues related to employment relations are certainly not our domain. That will not be part of the substance we include in the revision of this law," he stressed.

He added that the regulations regarding online transportation will be outlined in permanent regulations. The House's Commission V has currently initiated the regulation of app-based transportation in discussions on the revision of the Act on Road Traffic and Transportation, with an academic paper currently being drafted as the basis.

"My personal passion, and that of my colleagues in Commission V, is to create the best online transportation ecosystem. Like it or not, permanent regulations in the form of laws are needed. We are currently initiating this. It has been included in the National Legislation Program," he said.
