- Since 2016, the Risk Management Program (PMR) has supervised processed food safety in Indonesia, delivering significant benefits over its first decade.
- The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) has proposed the program as part of the government’s national priority agenda.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) head Taruna Ikrar revealed that the Risk Management Program (PMR) has been running for a decade since its launch in 2016. Evaluations over the past ten years show that the program has significantly strengthened oversight of food safety for processed foods in Indonesia.
“Given its substantial impact over the past decade, we will recommend this risk management program as a national priority to the president,” Taruna said after the National Coordination Forum for Commercial Sterile Food 2026 at the BPOM office on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
He explained that the program is applied based on the level of risk associated with food and beverage products from the industrial sector. Risks include potential poisoning, digestive problems, and more serious health effects if adequate supervision is not carried out.
The program encourages industry players to conduct internal oversight by referring to safety standards and product risk levels. Industries are also required to comply with production process standards regulated under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification.
Taruna noted that participation has grown steadily over the past decade, involving not only large companies but also micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
“Initially, only a few industries joined the program, but after ten years, participation has expanded. It now includes not only major players but also many MSMEs,” he said.
He added that the program’s significant benefits are the reason BPOM has proposed it as part of the government’s national priority programs. The recommendation will also support the Free Nutritious Meal Program through collaboration with the National Nutrition Agency.
BPOM will submit the proposal to relevant ministries and ultimately to the president. Taruna emphasized that ten years of implementation demonstrate the program’s effectiveness and its worthiness for national development. (Misni Parjiati)
