RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry is strengthening support for ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) certification for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the metal and machinery industries.
The initiative aims to help SMEs meet international standards, improve product quality and governance, and expand opportunities to join national and global industrial supply chains.
ISO 9001:2015 is an international standard for quality management systems. Unlike product certification, it assesses how companies manage business processes to ensure products and services meet quality standards.
Implementation covers process control, human resource management, documentation, risk management, and continuous evaluation and improvement.
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said ISO 9001:2015 certification has become a crucial requirement for SMEs seeking partnerships with larger industries. “The ISO 9001:2015 certification has become a crucial requirement for SMEs to join the industrial supply chain. Therefore, the Ministry of Industry continues to provide assistance so that SMEs can understand and optimally implement this standard,” he stated in Jakarta on Monday, June 29, 2026, as quoted on the ministry’s official website.
Minister Agus explained that implementing ISO 9001:2015 not only improves product quality but also makes business processes more effective and efficient. With a documented and measurable system, businesses can reduce production errors, increase customer satisfaction, and build trust with partners.
He added that amid increasingly fierce market competition, SMEs must also meet quality, cost, and delivery (QCD) standards. Implementing ISO 9001:2015 is one way to meet these demands and expand market access domestically and internationally.
As part of this program, the Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (Ditjen IKMA) held a Quality Management System Socialization and Assessment Workshop on June 18–19, 2026, in West Java.
The workshop is part of the ISO QMS Facilitation Program for metal and machinery SMEs, which has been consistently running since 2021.
Director General of IKMA, Reni Yanita, said that ISO 9001:2015 certification is expected to help SMEs advance by improving governance, increasing production efficiency, and enhancing product quality to better meet market needs.
“We hope that more SMEs will have good management systems, enabling them to produce high-quality, more efficient, highly competitive products, and be ready to become part of a larger industrial ecosystem,” she said.
Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) show that Indonesia has about 4.4 million SMEs employing 13.4 million people, accounting for 65.38 percent of the national industrial workforce, according to the 2025 National Labor Force Survey.
However, in the first quarter of 2026, the added value of the non-oil and gas processing industry was still dominated by large industries at 78.45 percent, while SMEs contributed 21.55 percent.
Reni believes this reflects significant room for improving SME productivity. With SMEs dominating the national industrial sector, enhancing quality through ISO 9001:2015 implementation is expected to increase productivity, expand partnerships with larger industries, and contribute significantly to manufacturing growth and the national economy. ***
