House Speaker Demands Action for Indonesian in Earthquake-Affected Countries

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian House of Representatives urged the government to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens in Venezuela, Japan, and California, the three countries hit by the devastating earthquake.
House Speaker of House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has urged the government to continue monitoring developments, ensuring the safety of Indonesian citizens, and strengthening the protection and preparedness system for international disasters.
"The government needs to continue monitoring the situation and activating Indonesian citizen protection protocols in international disaster situations, including establishing an integrated information center for families in Indonesia, preparing logistical assistance, and providing psychosocial services if needed," Puan said in a press statement in Jakarta on Monday, June 29, 2026.
In addition to emergency response, Puan requested that the government strengthen the technology-based Indonesian citizen protection system by updating data on the Indonesian diaspora. This step is considered crucial for optimizing Safe Travel services and accelerating communication between Indonesian representatives and Indonesian citizens during emergencies.
"Protecting citizens is a constitutional responsibility that must be realized through measurable preparedness, including for Indonesian citizens abroad," she said.
She also encouraged the government to increase disaster education for the public so they are prepared for earthquakes, from how to take shelter during earthquakes to evacuation procedures in the event of a tsunami threat.
Meanwhile, the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) in Caracas assured that all Indonesian citizens in Venezuela are safe, despite the country being hit by earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitudes, which have claimed thousands of lives.
Indonesian Ambassador to Venezuela Fikry Cassidy stated that there are currently 38 Indonesian citizens in Venezuela and all have been monitored and are safe. The Indonesian Embassy building and guest house in Caracas were also undamaged.
"Currently, there are 38 Indonesian citizens in Venezuela out of a total of 40. All Indonesian citizens are safe. The building and guest house are also in good condition," said Fikry.
The Indonesian Embassy has had emergency response procedures in place since the fourth quarter of 2025 and has been disseminated to all Indonesian citizens. To date, the Indonesian Embassy continues to contact Indonesian citizens regularly to check on their condition through established communication channels.
