RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, expressed sympathy for the major earthquakes that struck Venezuela, Japan, and California, United States, in close succession. She also urged the government to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in the three affected regions.

"Of course, Indonesia expresses its sympathy for the earthquake disaster that struck Venezuela, Japan, and California, United States," Puan said in a written statement quoted by Parlementaria in Jakarta, Monday, June 29, 2026, as quoted by dpr.go.id.

She also expressed her condolences to the people of Venezuela, the country most severely affected by the disaster. According to reports, the twin earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.5 that struck Venezuela caused at least 235 deaths and injured 1,520 others, as well as causing serious damage to several infrastructures.

"On behalf of the Indonesian House of Representatives and the Indonesian people, we extend our deepest condolences to the people of Venezuela. We can feel the heavy burden caused by the earthquake because Indonesia has also experienced a similar disaster," She said.

In addition to Venezuela, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake also shook northeastern Japan, while a 5.6 magnitude earthquake occurred in Northern California, United States. Although no fatalities have been reported in Japan and California, several residents have been reported injured.

Puan appreciates the steps taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure that no Indonesian citizens were victims in the series of earthquakes. However, she urged the government to continue monitoring the conditions of Indonesian citizens in the affected areas and to activate the protection protocols for Indonesian citizens in international disaster situations.

"Including continuously monitoring the condition of all Indonesian citizens in the affected areas, establishing a centralized information center for families in Indonesia, and preparing logistical assistance and psychosocial services if needed," Puan said.
