RRI.CO.ID. Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) is opening wider opportunities for people with disabilities to serve as police officers. This step is a real manifestation of equality and tolerance within a state institution.

Through the Proactive Recruitment Program for Persons with Disabilities, the Police wants to ensure that no citizen is excluded because of physical limitations. This commitment was strengthened after the new Police Law was passed.

In an official statement received by RRI Voice of Indonesia from Indonesian National Police Public Relations Division, Head of the Public Relations Division, Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir, explained the principle used by the Police. The selection process still emphasizes competence, integrity, and suitability for the organization’s needs.

However, it includes adjustments for the applicant’s disability. " Polri gives equal opportunities to persons with disabilities to serve the nation and state. In the selection process, we apply fairness and inclusivity by making adjustments according to the applicant’s condition, without lowering the required competency standards,” Johnny said to reporters in Jakarta on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

The legal basis for the program is already strong. Polri refers to Law Number 8 of 2016 on Persons with Disabilities. It also refers to Law Number 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian National Police, and Police Regulation Number 10 of 2019 on Proactive Recruitment of Police Candidates. These regulations provide the foundation for fair and measurable recruitment.

The Police does not open all positions to applicants with disabilities. Placement is based on competence and the applicant’s capabilities. Some of the categories already recruited include persons with amputations, paralysis, paraplegia, and mild cerebral palsy who can still live independently. They are assigned to administrative, analytical, public service, information technology, health, and other supporting roles.

Recruitment has been ongoing for several years. In 2024, Polri accepted two persons with disabilities through the Police Inspector School for University Graduates (SIPSS) officer track and 16 through the Bintara non-commissioned officer track. In 2025, one person with a disability was accepted through the Bintara track. The numbers will continue to be reviewed according to organizational needs and regulatory developments.

This approach shows institutional tolerance. Polri does not see physical limitations as a barrier to service. What matters is potential, education, and the ability to perform the job. In this way, persons with disabilities have the same right to contribute to nation building.

Overall, inclusive recruitment marks a more modern and humane Polri. The police institution wants to serve without discrimination. “The principle is that Polri will continue to open inclusive, professional, and fair service opportunities for all citizens,” Johnny said.
