RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The coal supply for power plants on the island of Java has begun to stabilize. State‑owned electricity company PT PLN (Persero) has ensured that the distribution of coal -- the main fuel for coal‑fired power plants -- is proceeding as needed, allowing the recovery of the power system to continue.

“The supply of primary energy (coal) that meets the specifications required by our power plants is progressing well,” said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo in a statement in Jakarta on Monday, June 22, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to Darmawan, the improved coal supply has enabled the gradual recovery of the power system on Java, showing positive progress. PLN remains committed to strengthening coal supply chain management and improving power plant reliability to maintain a stable electricity supply in the future.

“We would like to offer our deepest apologies for the inconvenience caused to the public due to last week’s rolling blackouts,” he said.

Earlier, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) identified constraints in the availability of medium‑calorie coal, around 5,200 kcal per kg Gross As Received (GAR), required by several PLN power plants. To address this, Minister Bahlil Lahadalia formed a special procurement team to bolster coal supplies for coal‑fired power plants.

The government is also considering adjusting coal prices for PLN amid rising production costs for suppliers. The measure relates to meeting the Domestic Market Obligation (DMO) requirement, currently set at USD 70 per metric ton.

PLN previously accelerated the procurement of medium‑rank coal, which is now being distributed to PLN‑owned power plants, PLN’s partners, and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) across Java.

The supplies are being delivered to, among others, the Suralaya, Jawa 7, Jawa 9 and 10, Indramayu, Pelabuhan Ratu, Lontar, Labuan, Paiton, Rembang, Pacitan, and Tanjung Awar‑awar coal‑fired power plants. ***
