RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) is strengthening its supervision of products sold on online platforms to address risks posed by the rapid growth of e-commerce.
“The ease of transactions through e-commerce presents various potential risks that endanger the public,” BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar said at the “Socialization of BPOM Regulation No. 8/2026” event on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at the BPOM Office in Jakarta.
He explained that BPOM has established a special directorate to oversee digital products, incorporating intelligence and cybersecurity functions. The Cyber Directorate monitors and investigates online activity around the clock, working closely with the Intelligence Directorate to ensure comprehensive oversight.
BPOM also enforces regulations that encourage public participation.
Taruna noted that Indonesians can report suspected violations involving drugs and food. He stressed that collaboration between the public and relevant directorates is crucial for consumer protection, with supervision focusing on verifying distribution permit numbers on marketed products.
“We carry out this function through collaboration between the public and our directorate to monitor and ensure clear standards. Clear standards mean that the first thing we monitor is the distribution permit number,” he said.
Taruna emphasized that products without distribution permits can be detected through monitoring systems and public reports. These measures, he added, ensure that products circulating in the market are safe, high-quality, and effective. (Misni Parjiati)
