RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, has called on Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, to adapt to advances in information technology. He said digital literacy is becoming increasingly important to help students remain competitive in a rapidly changing world.
Speaking during a visit to an Islamic boarding school in Bandung Regency, West Java, on Tuesday, June 16, 2026 Cucun emphasized that pesantren should become active participants in Indonesia’s digital transformation. He said religious educational institutions must not be left behind as technological innovation continues to reshape society.
According to him, the emergence of artificial intelligence and other advanced technologies is transforming sectors ranging from education to the labor market. As a result, strengthening digital literacy among students has become a strategic priority.
He noted that equipping students with technological skills is consistent with Indonesia’s broader human resource development agenda. The government views digital competence as a key requirement for achieving the country’s long-term development vision, known as Indonesia Emas 2045.
Cucun said pesantren have significant potential to produce graduates who excel in both religious studies and modern technology. He believes this combination can help create a new generation capable of responding to global challenges.
At the same time, he stressed that adopting technology does not mean abandoning the traditional values that have long defined Islamic boarding schools. Instead, technology should be used to enhance educational quality and expand access to knowledge.
The lawmaker said, combining Islamic values, strong character formation, and digital skills will help prepare students for an increasingly competitive global environment. Such an approach can strengthen both personal development and professional opportunities.
Cucun expressed hope that pesantren across Indonesia will continue improving technological infrastructure and expanding digital learning opportunities. He said these efforts are essential to ensure that Islamic boarding schools remain relevant and contribute to the development of future generations.
