RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The health sector is increasingly viewed not only as a public service but also as a driver of national economic activity. To measure this contribution more accurately, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) and the Ministry of Health are developing the Health Satellite Account (HSA), an instrument designed to map the role of health in the Indonesian economy more comprehensively.
The refinement of the HSA will be supported by the 2026 Economic Census (SE2026), which is expected to provide detailed data on health-related economic activities, ranging from medical services to supporting industries.
BPS Head Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti said the HSA has so far focused mainly on health expenditures. With SE2026, the coverage will expand, offering a broader picture of the health economy.
“Based on the results of the 2026 Economic Census, we will further refine and complete this Health Satellite Account,” Amalia said during the SE2026 Socialization event in Jakarta on Thursday, June 11, 2026, as quoted by infopublik.id.
She explained that the census is mandated by Law No. 16/1997 on Statistics, which requires BPS to conduct it every 10 years in years ending in six. Amalia emphasized that the benefits of the census extend beyond government institutions, as it produces a database that underpins development policymaking.
“The economic census is not just for BPS, but for all of us. Its benefits will be felt by all Indonesians because accurate data will result in more appropriate policies,” she said.
SE2026 will be the most comprehensive economic data collection to date, covering all business scales from large corporations to household-level economic activities. In the health sector, the scope includes independent medical practices, maternity clinics, the pharmaceutical industry, medical device manufacturers, and health research and development.
“The 2026 Economic Census is not just a census, but our collective contribution to building the foundation for the most up-to-date and comprehensive Indonesian economic data,” Amalia stressed.
BPS also assured that all respondent information will remain confidential in line with the Personal Data Protection Law and Law No. 16/1997 on Statistics, adding that the data will not be used for tax purposes.
To encourage participation, BPS is promoting the AFM movement, “Accept Census Officers, Fill in Data Correctly, and Maintain Data Confidentiality.”
“BPS invites the public to make the 2026 Economic Census a success through the AFM movement. Active participation from business professionals is highly expected because this census is only conducted once every ten years,” Amalia said.
Meanwhile, Head of the Health Development Policy Agency (BKPK), Asnawi Abdullah, said the need for health economic data is increasingly urgent as the sector evolves into a significant economic ecosystem.
He noted that the HSA will be a crucial instrument for integrating strategic information, from health financing and investment to the trade of health products across the value chain.
This data will serve as a basis for formulating strategic policies, including implementing the Health Sector Master Plan (RIBK), strengthening regulatory reform, and accelerating the national health transformation agenda.
As part of its support for SE2026, the Ministry of Health will deploy communication channels down to the regional level to raise awareness among health business actors. The ministry will also issue a Circular Letter to reinforce participation.
“We invite all economic actors in the health sector to actively participate in providing complete and accurate data, as this opportunity only comes once a decade,” Asnawi concluded. ***
