RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police (Polri) is committed to increasing the recruitment of persons with disabilities to build a more inclusive institution open to all members of society.

This commitment was conveyed during a Public Discussion Forum on the Recruitment of Persons with Disabilities as Police Members held in Jakarta, which provided a platform to strengthen inclusive policies within the force.

Head of the National Police Human Resources Personnel Control Bureau, Brig. Gen.Erthel Stephan, said Polri has made various adjustments since 2016, including regulatory changes, organizational needs, and aligning job positions with the competencies of recruits with disabilities.

“Since 2016, many adjustments have been necessary, including legal regulations and adapting job positions to the competencies of people with disabilities,” he said in a written statement in Jakarta on Tuesday, June 9, 2026.

He emphasized that inclusion requires readiness from persons with disabilities to adapt, as well as the willingness of all police officers to collaborate with colleagues with disabilities in the workplace.

Polri is committed to gradually expanding job opportunities for persons with disabilities, a process that requires support from all stakeholders to ensure sustainable implementation.

“To create more opportunities, Polri is determined to gradually meet this target. We urgently need support from all elements of society,” he said.

Currently, recruitment focuses on individuals with physical and sensory disabilities who meet the specified criteria. Access for persons with mental and intellectual disabilities is still under study, with classification to be conducted before determining appropriate recruitment and placement methods.

“For people with mental and intellectual disabilities, implementation will be gradual. We will first conduct qualifications based on existing categories,” he explained.

National Commission on Disabilities Commissioner Eka Prastama Widiyanta welcomed Polri’s efforts, saying the policy aligns with the spirit of the Law on Persons with Disabilities.

“I appreciate this step taken by the National Police. They play an important role in providing opportunities for people with disabilities to participate,” he said.

Secretary General of the National Commission on Violence Against Women, Dwi Ayu Kartika Sari, echoed this view, noting that the policy supports the participation of persons with disabilities in national security sector reform.

“Ensuring that people with disabilities can contribute to security sector reform is a positive step. This initiative can also serve as an example for other state institutions,” she said. (Misni Parjiati)
