RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) urges the country to establish comprehensive regulations on Artificial Intelligence (AI) while also strengthening its role in shaping global AI governance. This step is considered crucial to ensure that the use of AI not only promotes innovation and digital economic growth but also protects society from various technological risks.

Deputy Chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the DPR RI, Irine Yusiana Roba Putri, made the statement during the BKSAP Day event in Yogyakarta on Monday, June 8, 2026, as quoted by dpr.go.id.

She stated that AI development has already reached nearly every aspect of people's lives and has had a significant impact on Indonesia’s digital transformation. “On the one hand, AI offers tremendous opportunities to improve service efficiency, foster innovation, increase productivity, advance research, and drive digital economic growth,” Irine said

However, she noted that the rapid development of AI also presents serious challenges that cannot be ignored. She said these risks include privacy violations, the spread of disinformation, deepfake technology, algorithmic bias, discrimination, and issues related to legal accountability.

“AI is not merely a technological issue; it is also a matter of law, democracy, human rights, and social justice,” she said.

Therefore, Irine believes Indonesia must immediately establish a regulatory framework capable of anticipating these risks while still providing room for innovation and technological advancement. She stressed that the House has a strategic role through its legislative function in ensuring the creation of a comprehensive and risk-based legal framework for AI.

“We do not yet have a dedicated AI law. There are still significant gaps that need to be addressed, particularly regarding AI risk classification, transparency, algorithm auditing, legal liability, data protection, and public complaint mechanisms,” she conveyed.

In addition to advocating for national regulations, Irine highlighted the importance of Indonesia’s active involvement in developing global AI governance standards. She said Indonesia should not merely be a consumer of technology, but must also play an active role in shaping AI principles and standards that align with national interests.

She explained that various international organizations are currently promoting AI governance frameworks based on the principles of human rights, transparency, accountability, and human oversight of AI systems. “Indonesia cannot remain solely a technology user; it must also participate in shaping AI governance standards and principles that reflect its national interests,” Irine said.
