RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Public Works has allocated nearly IDR 1.24 trillion to the waste sector for 2026, aiming to strengthen waste management from upstream to downstream.

The allocation follows the president’s directive on waste management and responds to the waste emergency emerging in several regions.

“In 2026, the waste sector alone will allocate almost IDR 1.24 trillion. This is our response to the president’s directive to improve waste management,” said Acting Director General of Human Settlements at the Ministry of Public Works, Chandra R.P. Situmorang, during a media briefing at the ministry’s office in South Jakarta on Friday, June 5, 2026.

The ministry is currently evaluating final disposal sites (TPA) with the Ministry of Environment to determine steps for rehabilitating or closing high‑risk landfills.

The government is also working to reduce landfill waste by developing community‑ and city‑level waste processing facilities. “No matter how large or well‑built a landfill is, it will never last long if we don’t reduce waste at the source,” Chandra said.

He explained that the government continues to develop Integrated Waste Processing Facilities (TPST 3R), which are managed by communities to reduce waste residue before it is transported to landfills.

In 2026, the Ministry of Public Works will support the construction of 56 TPST 3R units. However, the government is prioritizing the development of city‑scale TPSTs along with the rehabilitation and optimization of landfills.

“The IDR 1.24 trillion budget is primarily allocated to city‑scale TPSTs and the rehabilitation and optimization of landfills,” Chandra added.

Through these efforts, the ministry hopes to improve the effectiveness of waste management and address the waste emergency across various regions sustainably. (Misni Parjiati)
