RRI.CO.ID, Tangerang - The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) reported that the sealing of an illegal cosmetics warehouse for imported goods in Kelapa Dua, Tangerang Regency, Banten, resulted in state losses of IDR 4.78 trillion. One smuggled product from China alone caused losses of IDR 500 million.
“We confiscated 956 cosmetic items in this warehouse. Multiply that, the state loss reaches IDR 4.78 trillion,” BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar said after the sealing on Friday, May 5, 2026.
He noted that Indonesian consumers remain highly interested in imported cosmetics, particularly those popular on social media and e‑commerce platforms. “These illegal cosmetics are distributed not only in Tangerang, but across Indonesia,” he added.
The cosmetics imported from China were predominantly decorative products such as makeup. Brands included Lameila, SVMY, Sadoer, Kiyomi, Charzieg, Rueiofian, Hymeys, ZYZC, Cwinter, Yayashi, Luodais, and Kekemood.
Ikrar explained that the products entered Indonesia through a general forwarder suspected of engaging in illegal practices. “Based on information obtained during the investigation, the illegal products entered Indonesia without proper import documentation, so it is suspected they came through unofficial channels,” he said.
BPOM has temporarily suspended operations at the facility and seized all illegal cosmetics found there, a measure taken to protect the public and prevent wider circulation.
Head of the Tangerang BPOM Office, Sony Mughofir, said the case is still under investigation to uncover the parties involved and the modus operandi.
In light of the findings, the facility may face administrative sanctions, including product destruction, in accordance with regulations. If sufficient evidence of a criminal offense is found, BPOM will pursue legal enforcement through pro‑justitia processes.
“In accordance with Article 435 in conjunction with Article 138, paragraphs (2) and (3), of Law No. 17/2023 on Health, such violations are subject to criminal penalties of up to 12 years in prison or a maximum fine of IDR 5 billion,” Sony said.
BPOM revealed that the warehouse had been hidden and operating for two years. “It was hidden in the sense that the surrounding community was unaware illegal goods were being stored here,” Taruna Ikrar explained.
From the location, officers also secured 1,047 items or 2,082,615 pieces of Chinese products valued at IDR 27.6 billion. (Misni Parjiati)
