RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The clean energy transition agenda must go hand in hand with energy security to ensure a reliable and affordable energy supply, according to the National Energy Council (DEN).
DEN Secretary General Dadan Kusdiana stressed that Indonesia cannot choose between the two priorities. “Now is not the time to choose between energy security and energy transition. We must implement both simultaneously to ensure Indonesia’s energy remains secure, resilient, and clean,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday, June 4, 2026, as reported by infopublik.id.
Dadan emphasized that global uncertainty is pushing countries to strengthen energy independence. Indonesia, he added, must accelerate strategic steps to reduce reliance on energy imports, particularly fossil fuel oil (BBM).
DEN data show that Indonesia’s daily oil consumption exceeds 1.52 million barrels, while domestic production is around 610,000 barrels. This gap forces Indonesia to import large volumes of energy.
“If imports reach 1 million barrels per day and oil prices are at USD 100 per barrel, we need around USD 100 million every day to purchase crude oil. This poses a major challenge to national energy security,” Dadan explained.
The transportation sector remains the largest contributor to fuel consumption, with about 140 million motorcycles and more than 20 million passenger cars driving demand for fossil-based energy.
To address this, Dadan urged faster electrification of transportation, including a motorcycle conversion program and the development of electric vehicle infrastructure. The government is also advancing new and renewable energy sources, particularly geothermal energy.
Dadan described geothermal energy as a strategic resource capable of providing stable and sustainable electricity. “Geothermal energy is expected to become a major part of the national energy mix. It has been successful for decades and is a crucial asset for strengthening Indonesia’s energy security,” he concluded. ***
