RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is seeking to strengthen police professionalism through improvements in recruitment, education, and human resource development. These efforts have become one of the key focuses in discussions on revisions to the Law on the Indonesian National Police (Polri).
As quoted by an official website of the House of Representatives, during a public hearing held by the House of Representatives’ Commission III with academics and experts at the parliamentary complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on June 2, 2026, Member of Commission III Safaruddin, emphasized that police reform must begin by addressing its root causes. According to him, the quality of human resources is the foundation of successful police reform.
He said the recruitment system is a crucial element in ensuring that police personnel are professional, uphold integrity, and are capable of meeting the evolving needs of society.
“Education certainly needs to be improved, but if the quality of incoming personnel is not adequate, the results will not be optimal. Therefore, recruitment is one of the key aspects that must receive serious attention,” Safaruddin said.
He also stressed the importance of a merit-based career development system, in which personnel are assigned according to their competencies and capabilities to ensure professional performance.
In addition, Safaruddin highlighted the need to strengthen human rights education within police training curricula to support higher standards of professionalism and public service.
According to him, the police force must also prepare human resources capable of addressing modern forms of crime, including cybercrime. As such, recruitment of specialists in information technology, digital forensics, and other applied sciences should continue to be strengthened.
Safaruddin expressed hope that revisions to the Police Law would provide a foundation for developing a more professional, modern, and trusted police institution capable of addressing security challenges in the digital era.
