RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is advancing sustainable food self-sufficiency through various strategies. One of them is the development of an integrated poultry downstream industry in Bone Regency, South Sulawesi, led by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with state-owned food enterprises.

According to a statement released by the Ministry of Agriculture on June 2, 2026, the program is designed to strengthen smallholder poultry farmers, create market certainty, and build a sustainable food production ecosystem outside Java.

Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry, Agung Suganda, said the integrated poultry downstream program is a national strategic project closely monitored by the central government as part of its long-term effort to develop the smallholder livestock industry.

“This is not a project to be taken lightly. It is a national strategic project aimed at building an integrated poultry downstream ecosystem while strengthening the position of smallholder farmers,” Agung said during a meeting on integrated poultry downstream development in Makassar on May 28, 2026.

According to him, South Sulawesi was selected as one of five priority provinces for the development of Indonesia’s poultry downstream industry due to its strong base of smallholder poultry farmers and its availability of corn as a key feed ingredient. Bone Regency was chosen as the main project site because of its readiness and strong support from the local government.

“If Bone succeeds, Insya Allah (God willing), other regions will succeed as well,” he said.

Agung explained that the model being developed places smallholder farmers at the center of the ecosystem. Through state-owned enterprises, the government will strengthen upstream production by providing chicks and feed, while farmers’ output will be absorbed through an integrated partnership scheme.

“The state, through state-owned enterprises, will provide chicks and feed, and then purchase the farmers’ output. This is the vision promoted by the Minister of Agriculture,” he said.

Through an integrated farm-to-market approach, the program is expected to strengthen national food security while sustainably improving the welfare of smallholder poultry farmers.
