Key Points
- Natural gas is projected as Indonesia’s main bridge to clean energy, seen as more eco-friendly than coal and oil but hindered by limited distribution infrastructure.
- Stronger government-private sector synergy and gas storage technology are needed to stabilize supply, support clean energy goals, and ensure economic growth.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Natural gas is projected to serve as Indonesia’s primary bridge in the transition toward clean energy, considered more environmentally friendly than coal and oil.
Chairman of the Indonesia Gas Society, Aris Mulya Azof, highlighted the importance of a national sustainable energy strategy. He stressed that green investment regulations must be aligned with carbon reduction targets.
One of the key challenges, he noted, is the limited reach of Indonesia’s gas distribution network. Existing pipelines are not yet capable of meeting demand across all regions.
“Supply constraints remain a major obstacle to optimizing gas use nationwide,” Aris said during RRI Pro3’s Gastalk program on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
Natural gas is seen as the readiest alternative to replace high-emission fossil fuels, and the government continues to encourage its use to support clean energy goals.
As an archipelagic nation, Indonesia faces complex energy distribution barriers between regions and islands, often resulting in price disparities and uneven supply. Aris emphasized that stronger synergy between government and private sector is essential to overcome these challenges.
He also underlined the importance of developing gas storage technology to stabilize supply, particularly during periods of rising industrial demand.
The government remains optimistic that greater use of natural gas will accelerate Indonesia’s clean energy independence. A measured energy transition, officials believe, will help safeguard economic stability.
With a clear roadmap in place, Indonesia is positioning natural gas as a key solution in its journey toward a greener energy future. (Diva Rifdah)
