RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The development of artificial intelligence should not be driven solely by business and technological interests, but must also safeguard society, democracy, and the digital public sphere.

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, underscored this point at the Indonesia AI Safety Virtual Engagement 2026, held online on Monday, May 25, 2026.

“Our vision is clear: to build an AI ecosystem that fosters innovation while upholding social values and democratic principles. Responsible AI means strengthening public understanding so that society and the workforce are prepared for these changes, with the principle of leaving no one behind,” Nezar said, as quoted on the ministry’s official website.

He noted that the rapid development of AI presents new challenges related to security, ethics, governance, disinformation, and the concentration of technological power. These concerns were highlighted in the International AI Safety Report 2026, compiled by more than 100 AI experts and supported by over 30 countries, including Indonesia.

“Artificial intelligence is advancing rapidly worldwide, offering vast opportunities but also raising serious questions about security, ethics, governance, and public trust. The release of the International AI Safety Report 2026 confirms this,” Nezar said.

He stressed that AI security must be treated as a core issue, not a secondary concern. The Indonesian government believes innovation and responsibility must go hand in hand for AI to deliver real benefits to society.

“AI security can no longer be considered a secondary issue. It must be part of the foundation of AI development itself. Indonesia believes innovation and responsibility must go hand in hand,” he emphasized.

The government views AI as a strategic technology to accelerate economic growth and strengthen public services, education, and healthcare. However, ethics, fairness, and equitable practices must remain central to its development.

Indonesia encourages the application of ethical principles, transparency, and accountability at every stage of AI development, while promoting a fairer distribution of technological benefits through dialogue, adaptive policies, and regulation.

Nezar added that ensuring AI security is a global challenge requiring international cooperation, shared standards, and ongoing dialogue.

“AI security is a global challenge. No single country can face it alone. Partnerships, shared standards, and continuous dialogue are increasingly important,” he concluded. ***
