RRI, Jakarta – Developing data centers, a national cloud infrastructure, and the domestic technology ecosystem is considered a strategic step toward reinforcing Indonesia’s digital sovereignty. Therefore, the government is urged to prepare a more independent and sustainable national digital policy framework.

As quoted by dpr.go.id, Member of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Junico Siahaan, made the statement during a Public Hearing of the Digital Space Working Committee of Commission I with experts and academics, at the Parliament building Jakarta, on Monday, 25 May 2026.

He also stated that Indonesia still faces a significant lag in technological and digital research development. According to him, this condition makes Indonesia highly dependent on foreign digital technology and infrastructure.

“Indonesia today is clearly far behind, both in terms of technology and research. We have only just reached 40 billion in research funding, while other countries have amounts many times greater,” he said.

He also explained the challenge of digital sovereignty is not only related to mastering AI technology, but also concerns control over data, digital models, and national cloud services. He said Indonesia needs to strengthen its basic digital foundations before speaking further about competing in global technology.

Junico also highlighted the importance of building more nationally controlled data centers, including reducing dependence on foreign devices and services. He believes this could be an initial step toward strengthening Indonesia’s digital independence.

“How can we achieve digital sovereignty? At the very least, we should have our own data and reduce dependence on foreign models and cloud services,” he said.

In addition, he affirmed the importance of developing national digital platforms. According to him, countries such as South Korea, India, and Turkey already have their own domestic digital platforms, while Indonesia is considered not yet to have a strong direction in building a similar ecosystem.
