RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is intensifying efforts to close internet blank spots by combining fiber‑optic technology, Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), and Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites.
Deputy Minister Nezar Patria said the integration of these technologies aims to expand connectivity in Frontier, Outermost, and Underdeveloped (3T) regions, as well as in non‑commercial areas.
He noted that LEO satellites are among the strategic options for ensuring equitable access to telecommunications, particularly in areas beyond the reach of terrestrial infrastructure.
“LEO is one of the options. There are many choices, including fiber optics and BTS, depending on conditions in those 3T regions,” Nezar said in an official statement in Jakarta on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Nezar emphasized that the government continues to evaluate the most effective technologies to bridge the digital divide. He added that LEO is not intended to replace existing terrestrial infrastructure.
“LEO also has limitations. If there is interference or cloud cover, latency will be affected. But this technology is highly effective over the sea or in mountainous areas,” he explained.
The deputy minister revealed that the government has already deployed LEO technology on a limited basis to support connectivity in disaster‑affected or isolated regions.
“We tested it in disaster‑stricken areas of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. LEO devices were distributed to remote areas that were completely inaccessible. We were able to connect, and even video calls were possible,” said Nezar. (Gusti Panji)
