RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) and the country's central government discussed the approved master plan for post-disaster rehabilitation and reconstruction in northern Sumatra, including the government's budget support. Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, explained it after leading the Sumatra Post-Disaster Recovery Task Force Coordination Meeting with the government.
"A coordination meeting was held between the Indonesian House of Representatives' Post-Disaster Task Force and the government's Recovery and Reconstruction Task Force. We discussed the rehabilitation and reconstruction master plan, which has been approved, and all thanks to God, the government has approved the budget," Dasco said in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, May 25, 2026.
Cyclone Senyar hit northern Sumatra in late November 2025, causing severe flash floods and landslides. Areas in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra provinces were affected, with over 1,100 losing their lives according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
Dasco also explained that coordination is done to ensure that the rehabilitation and reconstruction programs, including the work plans of relevant ministries and agencies, can run optimally and in an integrated manner. According to him, the technical implementation of the rehabilitation and reconstruction will be carried out by the Government's Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force.
"Technical matters will be handled by the government's Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force, chaired by Mr. Tito Karnavian (Minister of Home Affairs)," he said.
Tito, as the Head of the Sumatra Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Task Force, detailed that the total budget of Rp100.1 trillion (about US$5.6 billion) had received approval from the government level and was fully supported by the House. The 2026 annual allocation will be focused on priority infrastructure, schools, and housing
The Ministry of Public Works has the largest allocation, with the budget allocated over three years for road, bridge, and river repairs. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Housing and Settlements specifically used the budget to accelerate permanent housing.
"Our target for the permanent housing is to complete it by 2027 at the latest. We hope that people won't be confined to temporary housing for too long," Tito affirmed.
