RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is promoting a broader national identity rooted in cultural diversity, shared values, and civilizational heritage as part of its long-term nation-building vision. The message was highlighted during the 10th anniversary celebration of Pergerakan Indonesia Maju (PIM) or Indonesia Progress Movement in Jakarta, Thursday, May 21, 2026.
Indonesia’s Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, said the country should be viewed as a “civilizational state” rather than merely a modern nation-state. Speaking at the event, he introduced the term “cultural mega diversity” to describe Indonesia’s vast cultural richness and plurality.
According to him, Indonesia’s national identity should be rebuilt through a renewed understanding of its civilizational roots. He emphasized that the country’s strength lies in its long history of coexistence, cultural exchange, and collective values.
“And we see Indonesia as a country with what I call mega diversity, cultural mega diversity, whose cultural wealth and diversity are extraordinary,” Fadli said. He added that Indonesia must continue “reinventing Indonesian identity” to strengthen unity in the future.
The minister also argued that Indonesia should not define itself primarily through the narrative of colonialism. Instead, he said, the nation should highlight its history of resistance and resilience against colonial powers.
Fadli further linked Indonesia’s democratic traditions with local cultural values such as mutual cooperation, deliberation, tolerance, and togetherness. Referring to ideas from Indonesia’s founding figure Mohammad Hatta, he said democracy in Indonesia must remain deeply rooted in the country’s cultural foundations.
Former Vice President, Jusuf Kalla, also addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of discipline and honesty in advancing national development. He said progress and public welfare cannot be achieved without strong moral values and social discipline.
Meanwhile, PIM founder Din Syamsuddin said the movement seeks to promote collective awareness and social solutions amid current national challenges. He emphasized that togetherness born from diversity and humanity remains key to Indonesia’s future.
