RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government continuously expands welfare and education access programs for low-income families through the Sekolah Rakyat or People’s School initiative. One of the programs includes the renovation of 10,000 uninhabitable homes belonging to parents of People’s School students, which is set to be implemented this year through cooperation between the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas.

Quoting the official website of the Ministry of Social Affairs, the program was discussed during a meeting between Deputy Social Affairs Minister Agus Jabo Priyono, Baubau Mayor Yusran Fahim, and Tabanan Deputy Regent I Made Dirga at the Ministry of Social Affairs office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

“For Tabanan, what we can currently support is the renovation of homes belonging to parents of Sekolah Rakyat students through cooperation with the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas,” Agus Jabo said.

He confirmed that 31 homes belonging to parents of People’s School students in Tabanan, Bali had been included in the housing renovation program and are targeted to begin construction in June 2026. The statement responded to concerns raised by Deputy Regent I Made Dirga regarding uninhabitable housing conditions in the region.

“Many people in our communities are still living in uninhabitable homes. That is why we are seeking support from the central government,” Dirga stated.

In addition to the housing renovation plan, the meeting also discussed accelerating the construction of a permanent Sekolah Rakyat campus in Baubau. The Baubau city administration has prepared 7.9 hectares of land in Palabusa Village, Lea-Lea District, which has been declared suitable by the Ministry of Public Works.

Tabanan currently hosts a pilot People’s School junior high school, SRMP 17 Tabanan, with 74 students located within the Sentra Mahatmiya Bali complex. People’s School Joint Secretariat representative Jauhari explained Baubau had been included in the third phase of permanent People’s School development and is awaiting further approval from the Social Affairs Minister.

Responding to the update, Agus Jabo emphasized that the government would prioritize regions demonstrating strong commitment and readiness to support the People’s School program.

For information, Sekolah Rakyat or People’s School is one of President Prabowo Subianto’s priority programs, consisting of free boarding schools from elementary to senior high school levels specifically aimed at children from poor and extremely poor families. The program is designed as an integrated poverty alleviation strategy to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

Agus Jabo added that the government is currently completing 93 out of 104 permanent People’s School projects under the second development phase, which are targeted for completion by June 20, 2026, ahead of new student admissions in July.
