RRI.CO.ID, Nganjuk - President Prabowo Subianto said several countries have begun requesting rice purchases from Indonesia following its achievement of national rice self-sufficiency. He noted that demand has increased after several countries halted exports of rice, corn, and wheat.

“Finally, some countries have come to us. I said, give it. If they need it, we must help,” President Prabowo stated while inaugurating the operation of 1,061 Red and White Village/Subdistrict Cooperatives in Nganjuk, East Java, on Saturday, May 16, 2026.

He revealed that India and Bangladesh were among the countries that had stopped exporting food commodities. According to him, this situation has prompted other nations to look to Indonesia as a food supplier.

“A few days ago, India announced it would stop exporting rice, corn, and wheat. Bangladesh followed suit,” said President Prabowo.

While opening export opportunities, he urged the government to prioritize domestic farmers' interests. He emphasized that rice exports must not be conducted at prices that would disadvantage Indonesian farmers.

“Don’t sell too cheaply. Remember, this crisis could last a long time, so don’t let our farmers become victims,” he said.

President Prabowo also disclosed that some countries had requested discounts when purchasing rice from Indonesia, highlighting the high global demand for food amid ongoing uncertainty.

During the event, President Prabowo inaugurated the operation of 1,061 Red and White Village Cooperatives across Indonesia. He said the cooperatives are equipped with supporting facilities, including warehouses, logistics vehicles, and distribution systems.

According to him, the cooperatives were built in less than a year. The government also reported that more than 9,000 cooperative buildings and warehouses are physically ready in various regions of Indonesia. (Misni Parjiati)
