RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Trade Minister, Budi Santoso, underscored the important role of consumers in driving national competitiveness. Smart and empowered consumers are considered key to improving the quality of domestic products.

He delivered the statement during the 2026 National Consumer Day celebration at Sarinah, Jakarta, on Sunday, May 10, 2026. The event carried the theme “Empowered Consumers, Wise Transactions.”

According to him, consumers help determine the competitiveness of products in the market. Consumers who understand their rights and responsibilities encourage producers to deliver higher-quality goods.

He added that growing public awareness of quality products would directly strengthen national industries. Preference for local products is also expected to reduce imports.

“If our products are competitive, people will naturally choose domestic goods,” Budi said. Therefore, consumers play a vital role in supporting the national economy.

The minister also highlighted challenges in the digital era, where consumers must be wiser in transactions. The growth of e-commerce should be matched by a better understanding of consumer rights.

Meanwhile, Vice Trade Minister, Dyah Roro Esti, urged the public to be more careful when shopping, both offline and online. Consumers should check product information, compare prices, and verify seller credibility.

The government hopes National Consumer Day will improve consumer literacy amid rapid digital trade growth. It also serves as a reminder that consumers are strategic players in creating fair and sustainable commerce.
