RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Jakarta Governor, Pramono Anung, officially kicked off Jakarta’s 499th Anniversary celebration at Plaza Festival Pedestrian, H.R. Rasuna Said Street, Kuningan, South Jakarta on Sunday morning, 10 May 2026. The event featured the Declaration of the Waste Sorting Movement themed “Towards 5 Centuries, Keep Jakarta Clean.”

“The launch of the 499th Anniversary celebration was intentionally held here as part of demonstrating the people of Jakarta that the city is currently undergoing improvements. In accordance with Law Number 2 of 2024, Jakarta is becoming a global city and the center of the national economy, while still retaining its status as the Capital City of the Republic of Indonesia,” Governor Pramono said in a speech as quoted in a press release of Jakarta provincial government.

The Rasuna Said corridor was chosen as the venue to symbolize Jakarta’s transformation into a global city that continues to improve and modernize itself. The redevelopment of the Rasuna Said area is in line with road and drainage improvements, the construction of bus stops, bicycle lanes, upgraded public street lighting, and widened sidewalks based on a complete street concept that is friendly to pedestrians and people with disabilities. Governor Pramono is targeting completion of the Rasuna Said area redevelopment by next month.

On this occasion, Governor Pramono declared the Waste Sorting Movement to help reduce the burden on landfills. This directive takes effect simultaneously from 10 May 2026, throughout all administrative cities of Jakarta. Under the direction of Environment Minister and the Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs, he believes this movement can become a new initiative to address Jakarta’s waste problems.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Environment, Jumhur Hidayat, expressed appreciation and full support for the Waste Sorting Movement initiated by the Jakarta Provincial Government. In his remarks, Minister Jumhur stated that following the President’s directive, the government is preparing a waste management roadmap with the goal of resolving waste issues across Indonesia within two years.

At the same time, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan said the government has now established a single tariff scheme to accelerate Waste-to-Energy Power Plant (PSEL) projects in order to streamline the bureaucracy that developers previously considered complicated. According to the roadmap presented, the government is targeting emergency waste management measures in 71 cities, including Jakarta, through incinerator technology and waste-to-energy systems.

On the website of the Jakarta environmental service, it is stated that sorting organic waste, inorganic waste, household hazardous waste, and residual waste at the source is a simple step, but one with a major impact on the future of a cleaner and more sustainable Jakarta.
