RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – A push toward deeper strategic alignment marked the latest engagement between the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), as both sides explored ways to expand maritime cooperation beyond routine exercises into advanced defense collaboration.

The 2026 Maritime Operations Working Group (MOWG) meeting was held at TNI AL headquarters in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, providing an opportunity to evaluate ongoing programs and chart the future direction of bilateral efforts.

The Indonesian Navy was represented by Deputy Assistant to the Chief of Naval Staff for Operations, First Adm. Mochammad Riza, while the Royal Australian Navy delegation was led by Joint Force Maritime Component Commander Com. Troy Van Tienhoven.

According to an official press release received in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the two navies reviewed existing programs and opened new opportunities for collaboration in maritime defense technology. This marks a shift from operational activities to a more comprehensive partnership.

Current military collaborations include joint exercises such as New Horizon and the Ausindo Coordinated Patrol, as well as joint sea patrols.

In the latest meeting, discussions moved in a more strategic direction, focusing on capacity building through knowledge transfer, technology development, and improvements in maritime surveillance systems. Such efforts are considered vital amid increasingly complex maritime security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.

The collaboration is expected to enhance Indonesia’s military capabilities and strengthen its global standing. Through international partnerships, Indonesia continues to demonstrate its role in regional maritime security. ***
