RRI.CO.ID, Jakata - Indonesia is strengthening its commitment to recognizing indigenous forests as part of broader environmental governance reforms. The initiative gained international attention following a meeting between Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni and President of the Ford Foundation, Heather Gerken in Jakarta, Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
The meeting also involved Vice Forestry Minister, Rohmat Marzuki and marked a strategic step in advancing post-COP30 commitments. Indonesia previously announced plans to designate 1.4 million hectares of indigenous forests during the global climate forum in Brazil.
Raja Juli Antoni emphasized that improving forest governance is closely tied to accelerating the legal recognition of indigenous lands. He noted that the government has established an inclusive task force involving stakeholders from academia and civil society.
The minister highlighted that indigenous communities play a critical role in protecting forest ecosystems. “Indigenous communities are our partners on the ground, and we want to ensure this collaboration delivers real impact,” he said.
He further stated that the government is working to accelerate recognition for 95 indigenous communities. The initiative is part of Indonesia’s broader social forestry program aimed at granting legal access and empowering local communities.
On the same occasion, Heather Gerken, praised Indonesia’s leadership in advancing indigenous rights and environmental protection. “Indonesia has demonstrated extraordinary leadership on indigenous issues after COP30,” she said.
She added that the Ford Foundation is ready to provide technical and legal support to help Indonesia achieve its ambitious targets. The collaboration is expected to strengthen both governance and implementation at the local level.
Through this partnership, Indonesia aims to ensure legal certainty and improve the welfare of indigenous communities. At the same time, the country is positioning itself as a global leader in sustainable forest management through community-based approaches.
