RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia commemorated National Poetry Day by honoring legendary poet Chairil Anwar, reinforcing the country’s cultural identity and global literary presence. The event was held at his gravesite in Jakarta, Tuesday, April 28, 2026 and attended by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon along with prominent writers and academics.
The commemoration highlighted Chairil Anwar’s enduring influence on Indonesian literature, particularly as a pioneer of the “Generation of ’45.” His works continue to resonate across generations despite his short life and limited number of published poems.
Fadli Zon emphasized that Chairil Anwar remains a central figure in Indonesia’s literary history and cultural development. “Chairil Anwar, who passed away at the age of 27, produced dozens of poems that continue to inspire generations,” he said.
He also underlined the importance of preserving literary heritage as part of national identity. According to him, literature plays a vital role in shaping how a nation thinks, expresses itself, and engages with the world.
As part of broader cultural diplomacy efforts, the government announced plans to install a statue of Chairil Anwar in Russia. The initiative is intended to introduce Indonesian literary figures to a global audience.
“ The statue will be placed at a university with Indonesian studies, such as in St. Petersburg or Moscow,” Fadli Zon stated. He added that the move reflects Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening cultural ties through literature.
The event also included poetry readings and a public discussion exploring Chairil Anwar’s relevance in modern Indonesia. Writers and scholars emphasized that cultural initiatives like this serve as long-term investments in shaping national values.
Through this commemoration, Indonesia aims to ensure that Chairil Anwar’s legacy continues to inspire future generations. The initiative also positions literature as a key instrument in advancing Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy on the global stage.
