RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is advancing a new cultural diplomacy initiative by preparing to install a statue of legendary poet Chairil Anwar in Russia. The plan was announced by Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, during the National Poetry Day commemoration in Jakarta on April 28, 2026.

The initiative is aimed at introducing Indonesia’s literary heritage to a wider global audience through symbolic cultural representation. It also reflects Indonesia’s broader effort to strengthen international engagement through soft diplomacy.

Minister Fadli Zon, stated that the statue has been completed and is ready to be sent to Russia as a cultural contribution. “I have chosen a statue of Chairil Anwar, which we will donate and install in Russia,” he said.

He added that the bronze sculpture was created by Indonesian artist Bambang Win and is expected to be installed soon. “The work has already been completed, and we hope it can be placed this year,” Fadli Zon explained.

According to him, the statue will likely be placed at a leading Russian university with Indonesian studies programs. “It could be at St. Petersburg University or Moscow State University, or another university in Moscow that teaches the Indonesian language,” he noted.

The plan also serves as a reciprocal gesture following Russia’s earlier cultural contribution to Indonesia. Previously, Russia donated a statue of renowned writer Leo Tolstoy to Universitas Indonesia as a symbol of cultural friendship.

Meanwhile, the National Poetry Day commemoration included a pilgrimage to Chairil Anwar’s grave, poetry readings, and a literary discussion involving poets and academics. The event highlighted the enduring influence of Chairil Anwar’s works across generations.

Fadli Zon emphasized that literature plays a vital role in shaping national identity and cultural values. “This momentum reminds us that literature is essential in building character and expressing the voice of a nation,” he said.
