RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s leading consumer watchdog has called for urgent action to close illegal railway crossings and strengthen safety standards following the fatal collision between the Argo Bromo Anggrek train and a KRL Commuter Line in Bekasi on April 27, 2026.

The Indonesian Consumers Foundation (YLKI) said the tragedy underscored the need for a comprehensive evaluation of railway crossing systems nationwide. “Local administrations must actively identify illegal crossings and take firm steps to shut them down for public safety,” YLKI Daily Executive Rio Priambodo said in Jakarta on Tuesday, as quoted by Antara.

YLKI also urged the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the cause of the crash. The group emphasized that victim handling should remain the top priority, extending condolences to passengers and vulnerable consumers affected by the accident.

The Bekasi crash has prompted a swift government response.

President Prabowo Subianto has approved the construction of a flyover in Bekasi to prevent future accidents, noting that the proposal came from the local administration. “Bekasi is densely populated, and rail transport is essential. Many crossings remain unguarded, and immediate action is needed to ensure safety and smooth transportation,” President Prabowo said.

He added that the problem extends beyond Bekasi, with around 1,800 railway crossings across Java facing similar risks. The president stressed that comprehensive improvements must be carried out to reduce accidents and protect communities living near the tracks. ***
