Indonesia Seeks UNESCO Cultural Role, Strengthens OIC Support

RRI.CO.ID, Paris - Indonesia reaffirmed its capability to serve as a member of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee during a diplomatic meeting in Paris. The engagement took place alongside discussions with ambassadors and permanent delegates from Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states.
The meeting was led by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, accompanied by Indonesia’s Ambassador to France Mohamad Oemar. It aimed to secure international support for Indonesia’s candidacy for the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) for the 2026–2030 period, based on a release received by RRI Voice of Indonesia, Monday, April 27, 2026.
Minister Fadli Zon, described the forum as a strategic step in advancing Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy on the global stage. He affirmed the importance of building alliances to strengthen the country’s position within UNESCO.
“This meeting is an important opportunity to promote and seek support for Indonesia’s candidacy as a member of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the ICH UNESCO for the 2026–2030 period,” Fadli Zon said.
Indonesia also highlighted its commitment to playing a more active role in safeguarding intangible cultural heritage worldwide. The establishment of a standalone Ministry of Culture reflects the government’s seriousness in advancing the cultural sector.
“We reaffirm Indonesia’s readiness to contribute more actively to the safeguarding of the world’s intangible cultural heritage, including through strengthening community-based protection and expanding cooperation among OIC member states,” he added.
Beyond the candidacy, the dialogue also explored collective efforts to enhance the global visibility of Islamic arts and culture. Participating countries discussed opportunities for joint nominations and integrated preservation programs under UNESCO frameworks.
The Minister expressed hope that OIC solidarity would strengthen cultural cooperation and contribute to global peace. “I hope this meeting will further strengthen solidarity and cooperation among OIC member states in safeguarding cultural heritage, while reaffirming Indonesia’s commitment to making culture a bridge for diplomacy, friendship, and contributions to global peace,” he said.
