RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is encouraging women to take a leading role in promoting road safety through a special Kartini Day initiative. The program highlights the importance of behavioral change and public awareness in reducing traffic accidents.

The Directorate General of Land Transportation under the Ministry of Transportation held an event titled “Glow with Safety 2026” in Jakarta, Tuesday April 21. The initiative aims to position women as agents of change in building a culture of road safety.

Director General of Land Transportation, Aan Suhanan, said women play a crucial role in instilling safety values, especially among children. He noted that public discipline in traffic reflects the overall level of a nation’s civilization.

“Road safety is not only about regulations but also about mutual respect, discipline, and care for oneself and others,” Aan said. He added that a strong safety culture is a key indicator of a civilized society.

According to data from traffic authorities, road accidents in Indonesia have continued to rise between 2021 and 2025, reaching more than 158,000 cases in 2025. These incidents not only result in fatalities but also affect family welfare, particularly when breadwinners are involved.

“In Indonesia, two to three people die every hour due to road accidents, impacting not only victims but also their families,” he said. He stressed that improving road safety is essential for safeguarding the future of households and communities.

The data also shows that young people are the most vulnerable group, with 52 percent of victims aged between 15 and 24. Motorcycles remain the dominant contributor to accidents, accounting for more than 76 percent of total cases.

Director of Road Transport Facilities and Safety, Yusuf Nugroho, said empowering women is key to strengthening road safety efforts. “Women are not only road users but also play an important role in shaping safety culture and reducing accident rates,” he said.

The government expects the Kartini Day initiative to strengthen women’s participation in promoting safer road behavior. It also aims to build a more sustainable road safety culture and protect future generations.
