RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – April 21 has long been recognized as the birth date of Raden Ajeng Kartini, a pioneer of women’s emancipation in Indonesia. However, not many realize that on the same date was also born Radjiman Wedyodiningrat, an important figure in the nation’s struggle for independence.
Both were born in 1879, during a time when Indonesia was still under colonial rule, shaping a life marked by limitations. Despite this, they shared a strong concern for the nation’s future and pursued different paths of struggle.
Raden Ajeng Kartini advocated for education, women’s emancipation, and gender equality. She established a school for girls in the Rembang regency complex with the support of her husband, Raden Adipati Joyodiningrat, and expressed her ideas through letters later compiled in the book "Habis Gelap Terbitlah Terang" in which she criticized seclusion practices and traditions that restricted women’s freedom.
On a different path, Radjiman Wedyodiningrat played a role in Indonesia’s independence movement. As Chairman of Investigating Agency for Preparatory Efforts for Indonesian Independence (BPUPKI), he raised a fundamental question regarding the foundation of the Indonesian state, which later sparked the formulation of Pancasila by Soekarno. He is also recognized as a figure who advocated for a legally regulated taxation system in Indonesia.
Their struggles demonstrate that contributions to the nation are not confined to a single field. Kartini worked through ideas and education, while Radjiman operated through state forums and policy, showing that change can be achieved through various means.
Today, the ideas of Raden Ajeng Kartini remain relevant amid unequal access to education and employment opportunities for women. Meanwhile, the values embodied by Radjiman Wedyodiningrat are reflected in the importance of civic awareness among young people, especially in an era marked by both political apathy and growing digital activism.
The commemoration of April 21 is no longer merely ceremonial, but a moment to reflect on the meaning of these national figures’ struggles. The shared birth date serves as a reminder that although their paths were different, the pursuit of Indonesia’s progress continues today in the hands of the younger generation.
