RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government aims to stop importing diesel fuel starting July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen national energy independence. This policy is also in line with the accelerated implementation of the biodiesel program up to a B50 blend.

Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, stated that this step is part of the government's broader strategy to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels and optimize the use of domestic resources, particularly palm oil.

According to him, Indonesia previously imported large quantities of diesel fuel every year. However, now, the energy needs are gradually being shifted to biodiesel based on crude palm oil (CPO), which is considered more sustainable and adds value to the national economy.

"This year, God willing, on July 1, Indonesia will no longer import 5.3 million tons of diesel from abroad, saving 40 trillion in foreign exchange," Amran conveyed in his speech at the 133rd Graduation Ceremony of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) in Surabaya, Sunday, April 19, 2026.

He added that, in addition to stopping imports, the government will also accelerate the implementation of biodiesel blends gradually until reaching B50. This policy is expected to strengthen energy resilience while also promoting the downstream palm oil industry domestically.

"This year, on July 1, we will start with B35, then move to B40, and subsequently to B50," he said.

Furthermore, Amran affirmed that the utilization of palm oil-based energy not only impacts the reduction of imports but also opens up significant opportunities for increasing economic added value, creating jobs, and strengthening Indonesia's position as a producer of bio-based renewable energy.

The government is optimistic that, with technological support, cross-sector collaboration, and strong commitment from all stakeholders, Indonesia can achieve energy sovereignty in a relatively short time while also contributing to global efforts in the energy transition.
