RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia expands its cultural preservation efforts in the eastern region of Seram, Maluku, through closer coordination between central and local governments. Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, held a meeting with East Seram Regent, Fachri Husni Alkatiri in Jakarta on April 16, 2026. The discussion focused on enhancing cultural conservation programs in the region, particularly for traditional architecture and heritage sites.

The dialogue addressed both the opportunities and challenges of preserving culture in East Seram, which consists of the main Seram Island and dozens of smaller islands. With a population of around 150,000 people, the region’s cultural richness requires structured and sustainable support.

Regent Fachri Husni Alkatiri emphasized that cultural preservation efforts have been carried out through the development and revitalization of traditional houses. “Traditional houses serve as the identity of each customary community and reflect unique local characteristics,” he said.

He also highlighted the urgent need to preserve historical forts, including Benteng Geser, which currently requires restoration. “We encourage the revitalization of traditional houses and the preservation of historical forts to receive support from the central government, especially the Ministry of Culture,” Fachri said.

Responding to the proposal, Minister Fadli Zon stated that the government provides several funding mechanisms to support such initiatives. “The IndonesiaRaya Fund scheme can be utilized to support initiatives originating from local communities and indigenous groups,” he conveyed.

The meeting was attended by regional officials and cultural stakeholders, reflecting a collaborative approach to cultural preservation. Representatives from local government, cultural heritage teams, and business associations participated in the discussion.

Through this dialogue, the Ministry of Culture reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cultural preservation in the regions. “Revitalizing traditional houses and protecting cultural heritage sites will help preserve historical values and strengthen the cultural identity of local communities,” Fadli Zon said.
