RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Russian government has agreed to supply crude oil to Indonesia following a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin Palace on April 13, 2026.

Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said his office had met with Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilev to follow up on the leaders’ agreement. “The deal relates to long-term cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. We are pleased that we will receive crude oil supplies from Russia,” Minister Bahlil said after meeting President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, April 16, 2026.

He explained that Indonesia will continue to seek oil reserves from multiple countries, including Russia and the United States, as long as the purchases benefit the Indonesian people. However, he declined to disclose the agreed volume of oil, noting that negotiations are still ongoing.

Indonesia’s annual crude oil demand is around 300 million barrels. Domestic fuel consumption reaches 1.6 million barrels per day, while national production stands at 600,000 to 610,000 barrels per day, leaving a shortfall of about 1 million barrels that must be imported daily. “In the current global situation, we must be able to secure oil reserves from various sources, not just one country,” Bahlil emphasized.

In addition to crude oil, Russia has expressed support for Indonesia’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports. Indonesia requires 7 million tons of LPG annually to meet domestic demand. Negotiations are ongoing, with Minister Bahlil noting that “two or three more rounds of communication are needed, but I think the crude oil deal is almost finalized.”

Russia has also signaled readiness to help build energy infrastructure in Indonesia to strengthen national energy security, particularly fuel reserves. (Misni Parjiati/Lasti Marina)
