RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Culture, is strengthening disaster mitigation efforts to protect national cultural heritage. This initiative was highlighted during a seminar titled “Disaster-Resilient Cultural Heritage for Sustainability” held in Jakarta, Tuesdad, April 14, 2026.

Indonesia is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it highly vulnerable to natural disasters. This condition places cultural heritage protection as a key priority in national cultural policy.

Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, underscored that disaster mitigation is a crucial focus in safeguarding cultural assets. He noted that Indonesia’s geographical position presents both challenges and opportunities that must be managed effectively.

Threats to cultural heritage have become increasingly evident amid rising disaster intensity. In 2025, dozens of cultural heritage sites were reported damaged due to hydrometeorological disasters in several regions.

“Disasters are not only natural phenomena but also non-natural, including human-related factors. Therefore, it is important to build awareness and appreciation for culture and nature to create harmony and reduce disaster impacts,” Fadli Zon said.

The government is also accelerating the designation of national cultural heritage sites to strengthen protection efforts. Many valuable cultural assets remain unregistered despite their significant historical and economic value.

Meanwhile, Director of Human Resources, Institutions, and Cultural Governance Development, Syukur Asih Suprojo, highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional capacity in disaster mitigation. He stressed that preparedness among cultural institutions is key to ensuring sustainable heritage management.

Through this seminar, the government expects to generate concrete solutions and cross-sector collaboration in protecting cultural heritage. The initiative also serves as a starting point for building a more resilient and sustainable protection system in the future.
