RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) continuously enhances the accuracy and speed of delivering extreme weather information and real-time early warning systems as part of the evaluation of the 2026 Eid homecoming and return flow.
This was conveyed during a Working Meeting/Hearing (RDP) with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) held at the Nusantara Building, Jakarta, Monday, April 13, 2026.
The meeting, which involved several strategic partners including the Ministry of Transportation, the Ministry of Public Works, the National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas), the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas/BNPP), and BMKG, discussed the evaluation of infrastructure and transportation services during the 2026 Eid period.
Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, emphasized in his presentation that BMKG plays a key role in supporting the safety and smooth operation of national transportation through the provision of accurate, continuous, and easily accessible weather information.
“BMKG operates broadly and in an integrated manner, not only at the central level, but also at various strategic points such as ports, airports, and main transportation routes, to ensure weather information can be utilized optimally,” he said.
During the Eid Transportation Post period from March 13 to March 29, 2026, BMKG provided full 24-hour operational services. Based on the evaluation, weather conditions were generally conducive, although heavy rain and strong winds were still recorded in several regions.
BMKG also noted the indirect influence of two tropical cyclones, Nuri and Narel, which increased weather activity in several parts of Indonesia, particularly in eastern and southern regions. However, through effective monitoring and early warning systems, the impacts were anticipated without significantly disrupting transportation.
From a maritime perspective, BMKG also warned of the potential for moderate to high waves as well as coastal flooding (rob) due to the new moon and perigee phases. Early warnings were continuously delivered to the public and stakeholders to support maritime transportation safety.
As part of extreme weather mitigation efforts, BMKG also conducted Weather Modification Operations (OMC) in several regions including Jakarta, Bandung, Semarang, Surabaya, and North Sumatra. This measure was considered effective in reducing rainfall intensity and minimizing disruptions to infrastructure and public mobility.
“Weather modification operations have made a tangible contribution in reducing the potential for extreme weather, allowing public mobility during Eid to remain well maintained,” he said.
In addition, BMKG ensured that earthquake observations continued intensively 24 hours a day, although no significant seismic events affected transportation during the period. Several aspects will continue to be improved, particularly in information dissemination, human resource capacity, and maintenance of facilities and infrastructure.
Responding to the presentation, Chairperson of Commission V of the DPR RI, Lasarus, emphasized the importance of strengthening BMKG’s technological infrastructure, particularly in ensuring the reliability of operational equipment.
“We expect BMKG to prioritize equipment maintenance. All technology-based systems must be ensured to operate optimally, as this is key to delivering fast and accurate weather information to the public,” Lasarus said.
He also noted that the nationally integrated system must be optimized to support more responsive early warning dissemination. Lasarus expressed appreciation for the support of Commission V and reaffirmed the commitment to continuously improve meteorological, climatological, and geophysical information services to support cross-sector needs and public safety.
