RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is encouraging the use of extended reality (XR) technology to strengthen its national film industry and support local intellectual property development. Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, delivered the statement during a meeting with filmmakers in Jakarta, Thursday, April 9, 2026.

He emphasized the importance of innovation in film production. He noted that emerging technologies could help expand creative possibilities while improving efficiency.

The meeting brought together film producers Dendi Reynando and Upie Guava, who presented their project Pelangi di Mars. The film is being developed as a science fiction production using XR technology to enhance visual storytelling.

Upie Guava explained that XR technology offers greater flexibility in film production processes. “With XR, directors can experiment and imagine more freely without being limited by conventional production costs,” he said.

On the same occasion, Dendi Reynando, said that the film is part of a broader strategy to develop sustainable local intellectual property. He noted that the characters are being prepared for licensing and derivative products to increase their economic value and competitiveness.

“Technology allows us to create diverse settings, including historical reconstructions, without the need for expensive physical sets,” Dendi said. He added that XR could also provide more varied entertainment options for audiences.

Fadli Zon expressed appreciation for the innovation and said XR technology could become a strategic tool to strengthen Indonesia’s film ecosystem. “We need to encourage the creation of STEM-themed works that can inspire the public while enhancing Indonesia’s cultural competitiveness,” he said.

He further emphasized that Indonesia has a vast source of stories rooted in science and history. He added that strong narratives, supported by advanced technology, are essential to producing high-quality films that can compete globally.
