RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The acceleration of electric vehicle (EV) adoption is gaining momentum amid Indonesia’s high fossil fuel consumption. The government views the transformation of the transportation sector as a strategic step toward achieving national energy independence.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized that the development of the EV ecosystem is advancing through industrial growth, infrastructure provision, and incentives. This strategy is designed to expand EV adoption while accelerating the transition to clean energy.
“We are pushing for the utilization of clean and renewable energy to be implemented more quickly, including through electrification in the transportation sector,” Minister Bahlil said after accompanying President Prabowo Subianto at the inauguration of PT VKTR Teknologi Mobilitas Tbk’s electric commercial vehicle assembly plant in Magelang, Central Java, on Thursday, April 9, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He explained that the government is working to build an integrated ecosystem to enable broader and more effective EV adoption. Regulatory easements and incentives have been introduced to ensure the program aligns with national targets.
“What’s crucial is that the implementation works well in the field. We’ll keep pushing to ensure it meets the targets,” Minister Bahlil said.
President Prabowo Subianto underscored that energy independence is a crucial foundation for national strength amid global challenges. He stressed that the transition to clean energy must be accelerated to reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
“One of the steps is to use electricity. By using electricity, we will no longer rely excessively on fossil fuels or carbon-based energy,” President Prabowo said.
He added that energy and food are strategic sectors for sustaining national development. Self-reliance in these two areas is considered vital to safeguarding Indonesia’s sovereignty and economic stability in the future. ***
